Xoloitzcuintle are an endemic breed of mexico, its meaning in the aztec language: xólotl, god of the sunset and death, and itzcuintli dog. It was considered a spiritual guide that protected the souls of the deceased who traveled to the mictlan (underworld).They were believed to possess protective and healing qualities, supernatural powers were attributed to them and they were used in religious rituals and ceremonies, it was believed that they were capable of warding off evil spirits and diseases.
