Red Mud

Two types of clay are collected: the one used for the molding and the one used to give it the red color. The red mud is worked with water to sift it, mixed with sand and stirred by hand. From there they get the clay needed to paint.

Once we have all the ingredients, the procedure to make homemade clay is:

We’ll put the two cups of baking soda in a bowl.
Add a cup of cornstarch and mix well.
Then we gradually add the cold water until a mixture is quite liquid.

In Mexico, red mud is made in different states such as Tlayacapan, Morelos; Catemaco, Veracruz; Metepec and Tecomatepec in the State of Mexico and in Huasca, Hidalgo.
